Established: 2001

Structure: the President of the Commission heads the seven-member commission, of which he is a member of; the General Secretary heads the Secretariat of the Commission which performs all administrative, technical and professional duties; the Secretariat is divided into the Cabinet, Department for Legal Affairs and Implementation of the Law on Conflict of Interest, Department for Elections and Information Technology, Department for Financial and Administrative Affairs, and Department for Financial Audit of Political Parties

Competences: to coordinate, oversee and regulate the operation of all election commissions and Polling Station Committees in accordance with the Election Law; to determine and verify all election results; has the power to annul elections in cases where it has established irregularities have occurred; to establish conflict of interest of elected officials

Level of Independence

– Permanence: established by Election Law 23/01 21.08.2001

– Appointment: President of the Commission is elected from the members of the Commission

– Immunity: Yes

– Financial Autonomy: budget adopted in standard procedure
