SKOPJE, North Macedonia – Forum of Women Leaders from Southeast Europe for Good Governance and Anti-corruption

SKOPJE, North Macedonia – Regioal Anti-corruption Initiative (RAI) Secretariat took part at the second regional conference of the Forum of Women Leaders from Southeast Europe for Good Governance and Anti-corruption, organized by the Government of Republic of North Macedonia with the support of the Office of UN Women in North Macedonia. Ms. Desislava Gotskova, Head of RAI Secretariat was a panelist at a panel titled Unveiling Corruption through a Gender Lens: Exploring the Intersection of Gender (In)equality and Societal Integrity.

The conference hosted a number of high-profile speakers who shared their experiences in the fight against crime and corruption, specifically as they pertain to gender-based risks. Despite women being overrepresented in countries across the region, this has not translated into genuine power and representation at a decision-making level. As such, the speakers have emphasized the importance of increasing personal integrity and transparency at all societal levels.

During the third panel of the forum, titled “Unveiling Corruption through a Gender Lens: Exploring the Intersection of Gender (In)equality and Societal Integrity,” Ms. Gotskova highlighted the ways in which corruption exacerbates gender inequality, limiting women’s access to resources and opportunities and perpetuating gender-based violence. However, she also acknowledged the unique perspective and experience that women bring to the table in the fight against corruption and the importance of including them in these efforts. Ultimately, Ms. Gotskova stressed the need for governments to pursue policies that promote women’s empowerment as a key factor in the fight against corruption.
