Workshop on ‘Integrity Promotion: International and National legal instruments and mechanisms’ – July 04-05, 2011 – Ohrid, Macedonia

The Macedonian State Commission for Prevention of Corruption (SCPC), with support and assistance of the Regional Anticorruption Initiative (RAI) Secretariat for South-Eastern Europe and Regional Cooperation Council (RCC), organized the International Workshop on “Integrity Promotion: International and National Legal Instruments and Mechanisms” on July 04-05, 2011, in Ohrid, Macedonia. The event was part of the the project “Strengthening the Integrity System in South-Eastern Europe”.
Based on Tirana Declaration on “Enhancing International Cooperation on Conflict of Interests Prevention and Declaration of Assets through the Establishment of the Integrity Expert Network (IEN)”, SCPC as a second Chairmanship-in-Office for the period of May 2011 – May 2012, brought together the relevant agencies in charge of integrity issues members of the Integrity Experts Network, as well as other relevant institutions from Macedonia, international stakeholders and organizations.
The main purpose of this event was enhancing cooperation between the IEN member institutions through the exchange of information, experience and knowledge on integrity issues. The Workshop provided overview of the legal framework on integrity in each country: existence, format, application in practice, best practices and challenges.
At the end of the event the participants stressed on prevention as an important part of the overall fight against corruption. In that regard they underlined the importance of promotion of integrity as opposition to corruption. The participants agreed that the lack of integrity in governments and state administration institutions is conducive to corruptive behavior. Budgetary sustainability in liaison with independence of integrity institutions was identified as potential topic on focus for some of the next IEN meetings.
