AIRE Centre (Advice on Individual Rights in Europe) and RAI Secretariat partnered up to implement a 2-year Regional Project on asset recovery titled “Strengthening anti-corruption in the South East Europe through improving asset seizure measures” (the Regional Anti-corruption Project). The training is the second in the series of three sessions on the topic of effective asset recovery organized within the framework of the two-years Regional Anti-corruption Project. It further builds up expertise among prosecutors and judges from South East Europe in the field of asset recovery and facilitates the exchange of good practices.
The training focused on international and European legal standards and the European Court of Human Rights case-law in the field of asset recovery in order to foster the implementation of the asset recovery measures in practice. Prominent UK and international experts, as well as experts from the region shared their experience with prosecutors, judges and practitioners, specialized in asset recovery from Albania, Bulgaria, Bosna and Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo*, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia.
The training`s aim was to build national training resources related to good practices in conducting financial investigations and effective asset freezing and seizure, European and UN standards, ECHR implementation, and facilitate the exchange of knowledge amongst peers, across the Western Balkan region.
The sessions focused on specific issues which are of concern to the whole region (such as more effective use of extended confiscation, financial investigations, evidentiary threshold for asset recovery etc.).
