RAI Participates in the “Towards the EU: Enhancing Integrity and Independence of Criminal Justice in the Western Balkans” International Conference

Director of the Regional Anti Corruption Initiative Secretariat, Ms. Desislava Gotskova, participated in the ‘Towards the EU: Enhancing Integrity and Independence of Criminal Justice in the Western Balkans‘ high-level conference in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

Ms. Gotskova was part of the “Leadership and political will to promote a culture of integrity: International/EU anti-corruption commitments: achievements, challenges, and expectations” panel, alongside Mr. Constantine Palicarsky from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, and Ministers of Justice from the Western Balkans region and Slovenia as speakers.

This opening panel of the conference addressed critical issues surrounding the fight against corruption, emphasizing the importance of fostering a culture of integrity through effective leadership and strong political commitment. Additionally, the session evaluated both the achievements and obstacles faced by international and EU anti-corruption initiatives, exploring potential actions to fulfill expectations and create sustainable, positive transformations in the context of EU membership.

This event, organised by the Global Initiative against Transnational Organized Crime, built up on the success of previous gatherings in Šibenik, Croatia in May 2022 and Tirana, Albania in March 2024 and brought together key stakeholders from government, criminal justice, international organizations, and civil society to discuss vital issues such as strengthening integrity, fighting corruption, and boosting regional and international cooperation.

To effectively combat corruption and strengthen the rule of law in the Western Balkans, it is significant to foster collaboration among stakeholders, share innovative solutions, and address the link between organized crime and corruption. By committing to integrity and independence within the criminal justice system, the region can achieve greater stability and growth.
