Romania: Anticorruption prosecutors go after former communication minister

Romania’s National Anti-Corruption Directorate (DNA) has referred to president Klaus Iohannis on starting the prosecution of Valerian Vreme, a former communications minister in the Emil Boc cabinet.

Vreme is charged with abuse of office in a case related to the state’s purchase of overpriced Microsoft licenses. The former minister signed a contract for the use of Microsoft software products in schools for 16 months, between September 2010 and February 2012. However, a previous framework agreement from 2009 didn’t allow such a subsequent contract. This has caused a damage of EUR 11.3 million to the Communications Ministry, according to the prosecutors.

Vreme’s predecessor Gabriel Sandu was sentenced to three years in jail, last year, in another case related to overpriced Microsoft license purchases.
